Imagine the high water without any levees. The tightly contained channel now becomes a much more extensive and indeterminate being. All the activity is totally different. Instead of a dramatic “flood fight” in the springtime, the seasonal pulse of the river filters gently into the lowlands surrounding the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi.
